Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy describes how Lernwerd (“we”, “us”, or “our”) handles information when you visit or use Lernwerd at https://www.lernwerd.com (the “Service”).

Lernwerd is a free, graph-shaped English dictionary and vocabulary learning tool. Most of your learning data stays on your own device. We may use Google Analytics to understand how people use the Service, and we may show ads through Google AdSense to help keep Lernwerd free.

We collect and process information in the following categories.

Information stored on your device

By default, Lernwerd keeps learning and preference data on your device in your browser. That data is not uploaded to Lernwerd’s servers. It may include:

• Learning progress and review scheduling (for example which words you are learning, when they are due, and how you graded them)
• Learning preferences (for example goal, level, and how many new words per session)
• Personal notes you add to words
• Display preferences such as theme (light, dark, or system) and language

Optional sync with Google OAuth and Google Drive

Lernwerd offers an optional Sync feature. If you choose to sync:

• You sign in with Google OAuth (your Google account)
• Your learning progress, preferences, and notes can be saved to Google Drive under your account so you can restore them on another device
• Sync only happens when you use it; it is not automatic in the background
• Synced learning data is stored in your Google Drive, not in a Lernwerd cloud database of user progress

If you never use Sync, your learning data stays only on your device.

Analytics information

When Google Analytics is turned on, we may collect usage information such as:

• Which pages you visit and how you move around the Service
• General engagement details Google Analytics can measure (for example scrolling or clicking links to other sites), depending on how analytics is set up

Analytics data is handled by Google. We use Google Analytics to understand and improve Lernwerd. Advertising is handled separately through Google AdSense (see Advertising below).

Advertising information

When ads are shown through Google AdSense, Google and other advertising partners may collect information related to ad serving, such as:

• Cookies or similar technologies used to show ads
• Information about visits to Lernwerd and, where applicable, other sites, used to help show relevant ads

Ad-related details are handled by Google and its advertising partners under their own policies.

Information we do not collect

• We do not keep a Lernwerd cloud database of your learning progress
• We do not sell your personal information
• We do not collect payment information (the Service is free to use; ads may help support it)

We use information as follows:

• Data on your device powers your dictionary lookup, review queue, progress, notes, and settings
• If you use Sync, Google OAuth signs you in and Google Drive stores and restores your learning data across devices
• Analytics helps us understand traffic and how people use Lernwerd so we can improve it
• Advertising through Google AdSense helps support the free Service
• A third-party hosting provider delivers the site securely over HTTPS

Unless you use Sync, your learning progress, notes, and preferences stay on your device. You can clear them in your browser, or move them yourself (for example with export or Sync).

Cookies are small files saved on your device. The Service may also save information in your browser so your settings and learning progress stay available.

We group cookies and similar technologies into three categories you can manage in the app: strictly necessary, analytics, and advertising. Optional categories stay off until you accept them.

Strictly necessary storage keeps the Service working: for example theme, language, and learning progress on your device. You cannot turn this category off.

Analytics covers usage measurement through Google Analytics when it is enabled. Advertising covers Google AdSense and other advertising partners when ads are used. See Advertising below.

You can change your cookie preferences anytime in Settings. You can also control cookies in your browser settings, use Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on, or use the advertising opt-out links in Advertising.

Lernwerd also saves preferences and learning progress on your device so the app works for you, including offline when that is available. That on-device data is separate from analytics and advertising cookies.

Lernwerd may show ads through Google AdSense to help keep the Service free.

Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to your website or other websites.

Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to your users based on their visit to your sites and/or other sites on the Internet.

Other third-party vendors or ad networks may also serve ads on the Service. Those partners set their own cookie details.

You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.

We rely on the following third-party services or platform features:

• Google Analytics: optional usage analytics and cookies when analytics is turned on
• Google AdSense: ads that help support the free Service
• Google OAuth and Google Drive: optional Sync (sign-in with Google OAuth; learning data saved to your Google Drive when you choose to sync)
• A third-party hosting and content delivery network: serves the site over HTTPS
• Your browser or device’s built-in speech features: optional pronunciation played locally; we do not send audio to Lernwerd servers

Third-party providers process data under their own terms and privacy policies when you interact with their systems. For Sync, that includes Google’s terms for Google OAuth and Google Drive. Analytics and ads also follow Google’s terms.

Learning data, notes, and preferences stored on your device remain until you clear site data for Lernwerd in your browser, or until you remove them another way (for example by clearing synced data from Google Drive if you use Sync).

If you use Sync, copies of your learning data may remain in your Google Drive according to Google’s practices until you delete them or revoke Lernwerd’s access.

Google Analytics and Google AdSense retention follow Google’s settings and practices.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding personal information under applicable law. Without limiting those rights, you can:

• Change cookie preferences anytime in Settings (strictly necessary, analytics, and advertising)
• Clear cookies and site storage for Lernwerd in your browser settings
• Block or delete cookies using your browser controls
• Opt out of personalized advertising via Google Ads Settings (see Advertising)
• If you use Sync, manage or revoke Google OAuth access for Lernwerd in your Google account settings, and remove synced files from Google Drive if you wish
• Install Google’s Analytics opt-out browser add-on if you want to opt out of Google Analytics across sites that support it
• Stop using the Service

If you have a privacy request or question, contact us using the email below. We will respond as reasonably practicable.

The Service is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the Service, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

Because the Service is delivered over the internet and may use Google Analytics, Google AdSense, and optional Sync via Google OAuth and Google Drive, information related to your use of the Service may be processed on servers in countries other than the one where you live, including by Google.

We serve the Service over HTTPS via our hosting provider and keep the application as a static client-side deployment. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure. Please use a modern browser and keep your device updated.

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after changes means you acknowledge the updated policy.
